Streetside Sodas

I just today finally found the photo missing from the "Same same, But Different" post two days ago. This is how sodas are served many times to keep the glass bottle in the shop for recycling. Sorry I couldn't find it to include in the original post.

  1. that's interesting.. what happens if you need both hands for something ? That plastic bag doesn't look like it would stay upright by itself. It looks like a mess waiting to happen. You got some history with that kind of container ?

  2. You're correct - they don't stand up on their own. You're one-handed until you finish it, have someone hold it for you or (as I have seen a couple of times) you hang it somewhere temporarily.

I haven't tried one of these street-side sodas myself because of the questionable quality of the ice (or water it's made from)... if you catch my drift!

  3. Apart from not standing up on their own, perhaps a little frustrating sometimes, they must reduce the amount of waste that needs to be collected and recycled/incinerated considerably.

I lived in the Netherlands for a few years (I'm British) and was amazed to find the Dutch using reusable thick plastic bottles for all their soda drinks. With a deposit of course. We, the less enlightened, had switched to use-once-and-throw-away perhaps 20 years before.

  4. They certainly do, Sam - good catch. If you look at the post from June 15, 2010 re: sodas you'll see they DO use recyclable glass bottles there, too - but I think the bag idea is kind of nice, other than the refuse it creates. Piles of trash aren't all that terribly uncommon there, either, sad to say.
