Three VERY Scary Things

Sunday afternoon and I'm up to my ears in a family project, so here today are photos of three really scary things...

A tiger within striking distance at Nong Nooch gardens in Pattaya

A crocodile feeding frenzy in Samut Prakan

The mascot of a large corporation making a travesty out of the local's gesture of respect.

No kidding. What offends me most is how they flattened the face and widened the nose as of he's saying "Hey, I'm one of you! Come on in and start installing your heart attack TODAY"!

Don't be too quick to bemoan American cultural imperialism :) Remember, McDonald's is a franchise. All the restaurants in the country are run by a Thai company, and the Ronald McDonald wai was their invention. I am not sure when it happened, but when I stopped living in Thailand in 2000, they didn't exist, and on my first trip back in 2004, they were there.

It was really more of my own horror at seeing how whoever it is reeling children in with "Say, kids... who wants 580 calories with 26 grams of fat(5 saturated),35mg of cholesterol, 710mg of sodium, 66 grams of carbs and 25 grams of sugar in their Happy Meal today?" Seeing tables of chubby Thai kids makes me kind of sad.

...and yes, I know there are plenty of other "unhealthy" chain choices to eat at there, too - I just happen to dislike McD's the most :-)

..it could be that they serve different forms of fish and thai noodles.. their menu might be healthier than the high fat, high sodium crap McDonalds sells in the states.

Oh, we could only hope they'd serve more responsible food choices there, but the menu is almost the same as in the US. I'll still do a post about the place - it's just not a pleasant task and I've been putting it off.
